Rib patterns are combinations of knit and purl stitches that form vertical stripes that promote stretch. In the elastic band, the front loops form convex lines, and the wrong ones are concave. Products made with an elastic band are designed for a tight fit, special attention should be paid to the choice of yarn. Wool produces a springy, stretchy rib, while cotton rib will be flat and even. A tight sweater made from the wrong yarn will not fit well.
Ribbons are knitted with knitting needles one, two or three sizes smaller than for the pattern of the main fabric. Interesting patterns can be obtained by combining simple elastic bands with braids, openwork and criss-cross loops. Measuring the length of a product made with elastic can be difficult, as they will vary depending on whether the product is stretched in width or compressed. As a result, unless the instructions say otherwise, the best solution is to measure half-stretched elastic bands.
Simple gum. A feature of the elastic band is the alternation of front and back loops, they are knitted one above the other, and in accordance with the pattern. Description of knitting: Dial an even number of loops, knit (k1, p1) to the end of the row. The second row is knitted like the first. If an odd number of stitches are cast on, knit the first stitch, then (purl 1, knit 1) to the end of the row. On the next row, purl the first stitch, then repeat (K1, P1) to the end of the row.
Double rubber. A very elastic canvas with clear convex and concave lines is obtained by repeating the following rapport: 2 faces., 2 out. For this gum, the number of loops is a multiple of four, in each row the rapport (2 persons., 2 out.) is repeated throughout the entire series. For balance, at the end of each row, knit a multiple of four stitches, plus two stitches. Different knitting options for elastic bands: Elastic band "Facial purl".
The elastic is performed by alternating the front and back loops. It is also called a single, or simple, rubber band.
Purl stitching the purl rows reduces the elasticity of the cutter, resulting in a rather attractive texture.
Elastic band with a distinct structure, facial loops in the front rows and purl loops in the wrong rows are knitted from the back wall of the loops of the previous row.
"Two facial, two purl." Also called a double elastic band or a 2 x 2 elastic band. Classic knitting pattern that looks the same on both sides.
Purl stitching the purl rows turns the 2-by-2 ribbing into a dense fabric with vertical stripes of stocking and garter stitch.

We collect the number of loops, a multiple of four plus three loops. We knit two facial, two purl. But knitting facial loops is not easy. First we knit the second front loop, then the first. In the second row, when we knit the wrong side, we knit the front loops in a simple way, and the other wrong ones.

The main feature of any "gum" pattern is its elasticity and ability to stretch well, thanks to which it got its name.
Simple gum knitting
A simple elastic band is a fabric consisting of alternating sets of knit and purl loops. As a result of knitting, continuous vertical columns are formed, convex due to facial loops and concave due to purl.
Knitting gum with knitting needles is used in cases where it is necessary to achieve the effect of fitting a figure with a fabric product: cuffs, necklines, fitted parts, etc. - all this is advisable to knit with an elastic band. Interesting patterns can be achieved by combining a simple elastic band with braids, crossed loops, lace and other patterns.
Designations for a simple elastic band
As a rule, simple elastic bands are indicated by the formula N x M, where N and M are the number of front and back loops, respectively. Most often N=M. For example, 1x1 and 2x2 rubber bands are very common.
But in fact, knitting an elastic band with knitting needles is possible using almost any combination of basic loops, the main thing is to keep the proportions that allow the fabric to be elastic, and also to harmonize with the rest of the patterns of the product.
We knit a simple elastic band
For everyone who is interested in how to knit an elastic band with knitting needles, we offer a universal technique.
- Select the N and M values (number of front and back loops) necessary for your product, which will form vertical columns.
- Calculate "rapport" - a repeating combination of loops to create a pattern using the formula R \u003d N + M.
- Cast on a number of stitches that is a multiple of R and add 2 more edge stitches. The circular elastic band with knitting needles does not require the input of edge loops.
- Knit the first row and all odd ones according to the following sequence of loops: knit N, purl M, knit N ... etc. Do not forget about the rules of edge loops for non-circular knitting.
- Even rows with circular knitting are similar to item 4. When knitting the fabric, it is necessary to knit the wrong ones over all the purl loops, and over the front ones, respectively, the front ones, to comply with the pattern.
double rib knitting
Such an elastic band is used in cases where it is necessary that the canvas fits as tightly as possible to the figure and keeps its shape. These can be scarves, hats, as well as product elements such as belts, necklines or cuffs.
Knitting method
Creating a double elastic band is almost as easy as knitting an elastic band with knitting needles in its simple version:
- Type on the spokes of the loop in a multiple of four, and add two edge loops (this is not done with circular knitting).
- We knit the first row (and all subsequent odd ones) to the very end, alternating between the front loop, knitted behind the front wall and re-shot not knitted, and the loop with the preliminary movement of the working thread in front of the canvas.
- In the second (and all even rows), when knitting the fabric, we alternate one purl loop with one untied one, leading the working thread behind the product. When circular, we alternate the re-shot loop with the front one. This is the double rubber band.
English gum
English, or pearl, is the most popular among all gum options. It has a lush relief and soft texture, thanks to which it is widely used in knitting such voluminous products as jumpers, hats, scarves, etc.
This type is poorly suited for knitting cuffs and product edges, since the fabric pattern is soft and not very elastic. The main loops and loops-nakida - these are the elements with which the English gum is knitted with knitting needles. The process is described in detail below.
We knit an English gum
- An odd number of loops and two edge loops are typed on the knitting needles.
- We knit the first row according to a rapport of three loops: one yarn over, an untied loop with a working thread wound behind the canvas, one front loop.
- The second row consists of a crochet, one unknitted loop and two loops knitted together with one knit.
- In the third row, two loops are knitted together with the front one, then a yarn over goes and one loop is thrown over without knitting.
It is important to correctly close the loops of the English gum. To make the edge look neat and even, closing the loops should be done after a row knitted, according to paragraph 2, in the usual way.
English ribbing in circular knitting
With a slightly circular variant, the English gum is knitted differently with knitting needles, the knitting pattern for the 1 × 1 set has the following decoding:
- Row 1. Facial loop, yarn over, thrown over untied loop.
- Row 2. Yarn over, untied loop, purl loop.
- Row 3. Two loops knitted together, then - an untied loop.
English 2×2 gum also looks very good. For its implementation, it is necessary to dial a multiple of the 4th number of loops and two edge loops. Then:
- Row 1. We knit a row in the same way as knitting a simple elastic band - we alternate two facial and two purl. We knit the last two loops of the row with facial loops.
- Row 2. We repeat the following rapport: yarn over, reshoot without knitting the next two loops, two facial ones. Before the last two loops of the row, we make a crochet, but we do not knit them ourselves.
- Row 3. Knit together the yarn over and the loop following it. Then one front, yarn over, do not knit two loops. We knit the penultimate loop of the row with the front one with a crochet, the last one is also the front one.
- Row 4. We knit according to the rapport: yarn over, we do not knit two loops, we knit the next loop with the front one together with the yarn over, then the front one again. We complete the row with two not knitted loops, in front of which we make a crochet.
Further knitting of the fabric takes place in the cycle according to the scheme indicated for rows 3 and 4.

Polish rib, due to its loose texture, is an excellent option for knitting snoods, scarves, collars and children's things.

This gum got its name from the fact that its loops in the column are uneven. This effect is obtained due to the method of knitting the purl crossed loop.
The knitting is double-sided, used when knitting cuffs, elastic, less stretchy than a regular 1x1 elastic band, knits on any number of loops. For the sample, dial an even number of loops and knit according to the scheme:

Finally, I found another pattern that is great for knitting scarves and stoles. Openwork, double-sided - what you need! True, strict, but nice. It does not stretch very well, so it is better to use it not as an elastic band, but as a finish. The only thing I would not recommend this elastic for the cuffs and bottom of the products - the pattern is quite loose.
Pattern "French gum" - another option
Very effective knitting from front and back loops. It is very different in appearance from standard 1x1 and 2x2 elastic bands, although it fits easily. In appearance, it resembles "corrugation", therefore it is often used in knitting children's skirts and as a finish. The purl loops in this knitting are recommended to be knitted in the second way. If you knit the purl loops in the first way, then in the next row two consecutive front loops will have to be knitted in different ways: one for the front wall (upper slice), and one for the back wall (lower slice). The number of loops is a multiple of 4 plus 1 loop for symmetry.
