How to change a fur coat

Today we will talk about how to alter a fur coat. I want to note right away that women's fur coats are sewn from natural or artificial fur. To distinguish artificial fur from natural, you can simply take a fur coat in your hands - a fur coat made of artificial fur is much lighter than a fur coat sewn from natural fur.

Working with furs is different. So for robots with natural fur, special machines are used - furriers. It is clear that in everyday life you can hardly use such a machine. So you have to work manually. With faux fur, things are a little easier, because faux fur can be sewn on a household machine.

And now I will try to tell you about how to alter a fur coat, in as much detail as possible.

Let's start with the fact that you need to determine whether the product being reworked is natural or artificial. There is a very easy way to check this. You need to take a needle and pierce through the product, if the needle passes through the skin with difficulty (sometimes it may not pass at all), then this product is probably natural. And if the needle goes through easily without any difficulty, then your fur coat is most likely made of faux fur.

To alter any fur coat, we need: a blade, machine needles - spade-shaped No. 120 (for working with natural fur) or a regular needle of the same size (for working with artificial fur), a specialized foot with a Teflon coating or fluoroplastic (plastic), polyester threads No. 40 (in the color of a fur coat), for manual robots, threads and needles, pliers (for natural fur) and a thimble.

We start with how to alter a fur coat made of natural fur. First you need to rip the fur coat, we rip everything off. That is, we rip off along the side seams, along the middle back seam. It may turn out that the whole fur coat is sewn from long, not very wide strips of fur about 15 cm long (they can be of different widths and lengths). That is, we separate the shelves from the back, the sleeves from the armhole, the collar from the back, the lining fromwe rip completely from the inside of the product, we rip the sleeves along the elbow seam, as well as the shoulder seams.

We will need measurements of the size (person) for which the fur coat will be altered.

Let's start putting off measurements on a fur coat. We will need a ballpoint pen and a measuring tape. We start from the shelf. The shelf is in front of us: 1) Width measurements, - lay off the floor girth of the chest, the floor girth of the waist and the floor girth of the hips. 2) Length measurements: - front length to waist, chest height, product length. We take the back: - the width of the back, the length of the back to the waist, the length of the product.

Now let's move on to the sleeve. Length measurements: - set aside the length of the sleeve, the width of the sleeve at the top, the width of the sleeve at the bottom (on the wrist). Now, according to the deferred measurements, on all the details, carefully from the wrong side of the fur coat, we begin to slowly cut out a smaller size with a blade. In no case do not take scissors for fur, this will damage it, forming bald patches on it.

When we finished the cut, we begin to collect the reduced parts. Every detail to its own seam. That is, the side seam of the shelf to the side seam of the back, the shoulder seam of the shelf to the shoulder seam of the back. In natural fur coats, all the details are sewn together on furrier machines. And since such machines are rare in everyday life, the fur coat will have to be sewn by hand.

We collected all the details in their places (where they were originally), all the seams are sewn, the collar is reduced and also sewn into the neck. We reduce the lining - in width it should turn out to be the same size as the altered fur coat itself, and the length is 4 cm longer (to tuck the allowance at the bottom).

The lining is already sewn on the machine through the bottom. But it is better to immediately bast, and then sew in, so that distortions do not work out. Well, the lining was also sewn in, the bottom is also sewn up (through the sleeve). The coat is ready.

And now we will discuss the nuances when it is necessary to alter a fur coat made of faux fur. I will please you right away: the robot on it will be a little easier. We need: machine needle No. 120, polyester thread No. 40, blade, scissors, hand needles, basting thread, pen and measuring tape.

We begin to alter the faux fur coat by ripping off all the details from each other (in the same way as in a fur coat from natural fur). Measures for reduction were taken in advance.

Let's get to work. We apply measurements on the details in the same way as they did in a natural fur coat. Take the blade and carefully cut along the marks. We cut it out, we take scissors and for each detail where the machine seam will pass, at the distance of the allowance from the cut, we cut off the fur, along the entire length of the fur coat.

Sweep the side seams of the shelf and back and sew on a typewriter (allowance - 1-1.5 cm). We pass to the shoulder seams, connect them (right sides to each other). Folded, you can baste. After basting, we sew on a typewriter. Shoulder and side seams are sewn. Next, we sew the sleeve along the elbow seam, the sleeve is ready (the other is similar).

Now we sweep the sleeves in turn into the armholes (each into our own) and sew on a typewriter. The reduced collar is first wedged into the neck, then sewn in. After sewing open all basting seams.

Well, the fur coat is altered. It remains to reduce the lining and sew it into a fur coat. We sew in the lining in the same way as we sewed it in when altering a natural fur coat. Well, that's all, the fur coat is ready.

A common situation: a quite solid sheepskin coat hangs in the closet, which is not worn for one simple reason - the product is morally obsolete, out of fashion. It was bought 5 or even 7, sometimes even 10 years ago, and today, of course, it looks old-fashioned. And what to do with it? Review

“Old mother's sheepskin coat turned out to be a great jacket. I wear it with pleasure. And my mother wanted to throw it away. Thank you Mobile Tailor!
Tanya, st. John Reed, Prospekt Bolshevikov metro station

Review

Good afternoon. I gave a sheepskin coat for alteration. When bending the arm, the sleeve turned out to be indecently short, all sweaters and blouses stuck out ugly. Especially uncomfortable while driving. I also didn't like the hooded collar. Very massive. I don’t know now what I liked about this sheepskin coat when I bought it ... Probably the price. I decided to change the sheepskin coat. The atelier suggested using fur from the cut of the hood to the cuffs. I agreed. There are no comments on the work. All seams are neat and strong. The fur on the cuffs looks to one side, and I was afraid that it would be inconsistent. Thank you.

Review

Hello, my old sheepskin coat hung in the closet for a long time. A thing that had long since gone out of fashion no longer attracted me. The atelier was recommended to me by friends when they complained that the closet was full of old things. I came to the studio at the Pionerskaya metro station with the firm intention of changing the sheepskin coat into a vest. The rebirth of my sheepskin coat was successful thanks to the masters of the atelier, they did everything as agreed: they removed the sleeves, made patch pockets from the sleeves, all the seams were sewn out. It turned out a cool vest in country style. Thank you very much.

Do not rush to throw out the outdated sheepskin coat. It will turn out to be transformed into a unique and stylish piece of clothing, you just need to connect your imagination to the matter and pick up a needle.

Popular solutions:

  • oversized models (loose fit, several sizes larger);
  • leather jackets (shortened, with an oblique lock);
  • in military style (large turn-down collar, straight style);
  • asymmetric with a smell;
  • to the floor with rich fur trim;
  • with inserts from other materials (for example, from genuine leather);
  • sheepskin coats;
  • by boho type and models with ethnic notes.

In fact, all of the options listed can be obtained simply by redrawing an old wardrobe item. True, for this you need to choose the right source model, as well as know the secrets of handling sheepskin and velor - the materials from which sheepskin coats are most often sewn.

Ideas on how to update a sheepskin coat

We offer some fashionable and simple ideas for reworking an old sheepskin coat into a new wardrobe item. To work, you may need various accessories, patience and sewing skills.

We make a fur coat from an old sheepskin coat

The most time-consuming option is to use the wrong side of the sheepskin coat. If the fur is beautiful, not wiped, then feel free to refer to this method.

For this you need:

  1. Open the product at the seams and cut off the pockets.
  2. The pieces are then sewn back together.
  3. A fur collar, lapels (you can do without them) are added, holes for buttons are trimmed, a lining is sewn (right on top of the bakhtarma) and pockets.
  4. The final touch is combing out the fur. This is indispensable if the sheepskin coat was previously worn.

Alternative way: Sewing on fur patches of the same width and length. The result should be a fur coat with tanned leather inserts - a very fashionable solution.

Oblique lock looks great on a sheepskin coat

Not without a pattern. To accurately guess with the sizes, create a pattern based on a sheepskin coat cut in advance at the seams. Then sew the lock on the bias - and the fashion item is ready.

Playing with accessories

Large pockets, which were so often sewn onto sheepskin coats 5-10 years ago, are definitely worth arguing. Holes from them are masked with patches of fur or stripes. Well, the bottom trim will be the salvation of children's clothing, which has become short.

Women you can refer to the belts. Ideally, the belt should match in color and texture with the sheepskin coat itself, therefore materials for it are simply cut off from the hem. The hood is also made from it. If the length of the product does not allow such manipulations, you can cut off the sleeves. The result is a sleeveless jacket with a hood.

How to shorten a sheepskin coat to make a stylish thing

Since ultra-short sheepskin coats are in fashion, you can safely cut off a lot of fabric. If this length does not fit your figure, find the widest part of the thigh. Attach a couple of fingers to it, get a suitable option.

  • Method one.

If you need to shorten it by only a few centimeters, then put the scissors aside. Instead, take a blade. Add a long ruler, a contrasting pencil and a small comb to it.

Important!

To avoid cutting yourself, cover the non-working side of the blade with a white medical plaster. Instead, you can take paper, but this option is less convenient.

Next, draw a cutting line along the ruler . In order not to spoil the thing, add 2-3 mm to the intended distance, and proceed to cutting. Hold the blade at an angle, not straight. And don't push too hard. Only bakhtarma should be cut off, keeping the mezra. Fur pile will need to be combed (use a comb or comb with natural bristles). Fluffy, it will help hide traces of interference in the design of the sheepskin coat.

You can skip the next step, it is optional, not mandatory. If you have excellent sewing skills, then sew the bottom . But you should not decide on this with insufficient experience in working with tanned leather or in the absence of a good machine. Reason: Needle holes are very noticeable on this material.

final step : gluing the seams. It will also be possible to prevent their dissolution with the help of special clamps.

  • Method two.

Allows you to shorten your sheepskin garment as much as you need.

Tools and materials:

  • centimeter;
  • sewing machine;
  • stone substrate;
  • marking pencil;
  • a hammer;
  • furrier knife;
  • specialized needles for skin;
  • thimble;
  • comb;
  • reinforced threads.

Action algorithm:

  1. Lay the item inside out. Use a ruler and pencil to mark the strip you want to cut.
  2. Trim off the excess.
  3. Finish the edge with a fur stitch. From the fold line - 0.4-0.5 mm - shave the fur first.
  4. Comb the pile up. Sew the hem from left to right.

Important!

A stone substrate is needed to beat off the edges. After that, they become thinner, due to which they are easier to sew.

Notes and recommendations:

  • Having decided to open a pocket or trim, be prepared for the fact that the cleaned area will differ in color from the rest of the sheepskin coat. This is inevitable, because outerwear fades under the sun.
  • You can sew not only on a typewriter, but also by hand. Use this method only if the stitch is even. Moreover, it should be such, taking into account the thickness of the product. If you are unsure of yourself, then sew the thing on a typewriter without using a thread. Get an even line of holes. Sew along these holes.
  • If you take up hand sewing, then buy triangular needles.

Most of the methods of redrawing and alteration require the skills of a seamstress and special tools. The cost of the latter will be quite high. If you are not going to experiment with sheepskin or suede with a thick lining in the future, then it is better to seek help from an atelier. The overpayment will not be so high.

It's no secret that such items of clothing as fur coats and sheepskin coats are designed for long-term wear. And some women can only afford one coat in their entire life.

But not only dresses, shirts, T-shirts, shoes and other all-season items of clothing, but also exclusively winter items tend to wear out, deteriorate, tear, go out of fashion in the end and be subject to other troubles over time. In order not to spend a large sum on buying a winter novelty, it is a good idea to simply learn how to remake an old sheepskin coat into a stylish one.

If you are not sure that you can alter your fur coat yourself, then it is better to give it to an atelier so that a professional can update the thing. But in this case, the alteration can cost you almost the cost of a new product.

well forgotten old

In order to alter an old sheepskin coat into a fashionable one at home on your own, you will need the following materials:

  • Fur, small pieces of suitable fabric;
  • Threads and other sewing accessories;
  • Lining fabric;
  • Accessories to taste.

How to alter an old sheepskin coat

In the course of working on updating the sheepskin coat, you can apply the following tips:

  1. Carefully inspect the sheepskin coat from top to bottom, especially its fur parts. It could be scuffed or simply missing pieces. You need to think carefully about how to disguise them. Helpers in this matter will be pieces of fur of the same shade or fabric, for example, suede - it goes very well with fur. You can decorate the erased area with original embroidery. But note that it should not look like a necessary patch, but like a stylish design element.
  2. An elementary replacement of the lining can give an updated look to an old sheepskin coat. Choose a lining fabric of a color that will delight you, cheer you up in a particularly dark and, for many, depressing winter period.
  3. If your sheepskin coat model is long, you can simply cut it off. The edge will be fine to edging with fur, but if you leave just a cut, it will not be worse: raw edges are now in fashion.
  4. Even the simplest detail, for example, a belt, can change an old thing beyond recognition. Now you can find a million of its options: any material, color and shape. Even if your sheepskin coat does not include a belt, you should not immediately refuse it: firstly, it can be worn on almost any clothes, and secondly, if necessary, loops can be sewn to the sheepskin coat so that the belt is not lost.
  5. Another element that will allow you to remake an old sheepskin coat into a stylish one is buttons. They will be the easiest to replace. You can decorate the simplest buttons with a cloth or use some other technique (decoupage, acrylic, and the like).
  6. To change an old sheepskin coat into a fashionable one, you can equip it with a stylish hood. Choose a suitable pattern and sew a hood from fur or a similar basic sheepskin fabric.
  7. A more complicated option is to change the style of a sheepskin coat. It can be narrowed or, conversely, embroidered, complemented by inserts from the same fabric or some original colorful one.

If you are the owner of a sewing talent, then for you, most likely, such an option as altering a sheepskin coat is suitable. To do this, you just need to rip the old one, fit its parts to the new pattern of a stylish thing and sew it again.
