What are they Natural Nail Polish and why it is worth abandoning conventional chemical options.

I love beautiful and well-groomed nails. And somehow it so happened that they must be painted. I especially love matte shades of red and lilac, pastel and even black.

In the last few years, I have had literally a few times when my nails were completely bare of makeup. And at such moments I felt very uncomfortable, as if something was missing. Well, it so happened that my nail plates are not particularly long or shaped and look in my opinion 1000 times better with makeup. But don't think I'm trying to justify my love of nail polish. I'm just letting you know how serious this is...

In general, when I changed all my personal care products to natural ones and even began to use oils instead of creams, the question arose very sharply of what actually remains to be done with these same nail polishes. After all, they are the most toxic beauty products! And this smell, which many people like, can lead to serious disorders and illnesses. They are especially harmful to children and pregnant women. I remember with a shudder how I painted my nails as a child with my mother's varnish, and along with my fingers ...

For this reason, I decided that it is imperative to find a good, high-quality and safe nail polish!

What's wrong with conventional nail polishes?

The fact that they contain substances that I can’t understand how they could even be in a product that will touch our skin and, accordingly, be absorbed through it into our blood. And let's not forget the pungent chemical smell that we inhale every time we open a bottle and paint our nails.

Previously, my favorite brands of nail polishes were OPI, China Glaze, Orly. And here's what regular nail polishes actually contain:

  • Toluene/Toluene- a chemical that leads to disorders of the central nervous system and reproductive problems.
  • Formaldehyde/Formaldehyde- a known carcinogen, for the first time I encountered it at the medical academy, it is with it that corpses are preserved.
  • Dibutyl Phthalate- a banned substance in Europe, leads to reproductive problems, hormonal imbalance and is toxic to internal organs.

We paint our nails every couple of days, putting these toxins on our nails and on our skin. And as we already know, everything that is applied to the skin sooner or later ends up inside our body, entering the bloodstream and spreading throughout the body.

The same applies to nail polish remover. Acetone, for example, is toxic to the central nervous system and internal organs. But even if it does not contain acetone, it still does not smell natural there.

It turns out there are nail polishes that do not contain toxins. It is very difficult to find them in stores. For me personally, it didn't work. But I found some decent options online.

Honeybee Gardens

These varnishes are water based and contain no hazardous substances. And what is a big plus for me - the varnish can be removed with any alcohol! That is, you do not need to purchase a special non-toxic nail polish remover. In the photo for this post, my favorite shade from this company is Wildfire, a very beautiful rich red color that looks great on nails. I also have a pale pink nail polish from the same company, which looks very natural and is suitable for occasions when you want a soft polish.

It remains on the nails for a couple of days without changes. And I noticed such an interesting feature - the shorter the nails, the longer it lasts.

Piggy Paint

It translates as "piggy paint". The shades of nail polish clearly match the name. Bright and shiny. I thought I found one without sequins, I ordered it, but when it arrived, it turned out that it was still so shiny. So now I think to whom to re-gift it, some little girl will fit perfectly.

But what I liked about it was that it remained on the nails for a long time in “good condition”. Only now, if the shades were normal ... So, if your daughters really want to paint their nails, these varnishes are ideal for them with their color scheme.

suncoat

Non-toxic nail polish. But with a big problem in my opinion - it almost instantly begins to lag behind along the edge of the nail. But it doesn’t need a nail polish remover, although it immediately becomes clear why - it can be easily removed from the nail plates with stripes ... Although their shades are of course beautiful.

Pacifica 7 Free

Does not contain many toxic substances, but is not a natural nail polish. The composition contains substances that are irritants and toxic to internal organs. Therefore, I would definitely not let them be used by children or pregnant women.

My personal opinion

Non-toxic nail polishes come with a price. Namely, fragility! Therefore, when buying them, be aware that they will not last as long as chemical options.

I have to paint my nails almost every day. And yes, it gets boring and you get tired of it. But I want to be able to paint my nails without poisoning my body. Therefore, I think that this is not such a big price.

In addition, during the use of natural varnishes, I brought out a few small, but very important secrets:

  • Always apply at least 2 coats. Firstly, water-based varnishes lay down in a thinner layer, and secondly, they last longer with several layers!
  • Avoid water. Yes, she is the enemy of non-toxic nail polishes. Therefore, having washed the dishes once and seeing with horror the result in the form of peeled nails, I always now wash the dishes with gloves on. However, like the floors.
  • After you have painted your nails, dry them for a couple of minutes under a warm (not hot) hair dryer. This will strengthen the enamel and the varnish will last longer.

What nail polishes do you use? Have you thought about the harmfulness of these beauty products?

You know that recently I went to Ylang Studio, where I got a manicure using natural products. I chose harmless Zoya nail polishes as a cover. These are not the most natural nail polishes, but according to reviews, they have very good durability. It turns out a compromise between the composition and quality of the product. And then I thought that I did not tell you about the benefits or harms of nail polishes.

What varnish is the most harmless?

In short, completely natural varnish has not yet been invented, as well as hair dyes (except for henna and basma). The main problem is durability. Of course, now more and more brands are trying to make water-based varnishes, but, judging by the reviews, they have not achieved significant success. I am far from being a gourmand, so I have little experience in this area, but I have already bought myself Benecos, which consists of 98% natural ingredients. It will be interesting to compare it with traditional nail products. Today I have prepared for you a rating of safe nail polishes and tell you which ingredients to avoid. There will be only one gel polish on the lists, I think that I will tell you more about shellac (and gel polishes) in a separate post.

3 Free

Although the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (a research organization supported by the US Food and Drug Administration) has recognized these ingredients as safe at a certain concentration, no existing eco-standard considers them to be environmentally friendly or safe. Contrary to popular belief that the nail is “dead tissue”, it passes about 8.5% of the substances. That is why the harm of nail polishes (and gel polishes too, but about them another time) is not at all far-fetched. Over time, even major cosmetic companies began to abandon these ingredients.

3 free brands list:

  1. Sally Hansen
  2. Deborah Lippmann
  3. China Glaze
  4. e.l.f.
  5. Wet N Wild
  6. Rimmel
  7. Maybelline

4- and 5-free

  • Formaldehyde Resin: phenol-formaldehyde resin, like formaldehyde in varnishes, is harmful when inhaled. Strong allergen.
  • camphor: camphor is dangerous to the body when inhaled in large doses

None of these ingredients are allowed by eco-standards

4 free brands (do not contain Formaldehyde Resin, but contain camphor):

  1. Dior
  2. Inglot
  3. KIKO Milano
  4. A-England

Brands 5 free:

  1. Catrice
  2. Essence
  3. Obsessive Compulsive
  4. Zoya
  5. Sante (despite certified products, the polishes are not eco-certified and even contain silicones. Sante disappointed me here.)
  6. Chanel
  7. spa ritual
  8. uslu airlines
  9. Givenchy
  10. The Organic Pharmacy
  11. Dance legend
  12. Sophin

These nail polishes are also paraben-free, but some brands at this stage are starting to write everything they want on the “does not contain” list:

  • animal ingredients (the first time I hear that the varnish could contain them!),
  • heavy metals
  • alcohol (considering the composition of varnishes, alcohol is definitely harmless there. Yes, and the nail plate is degreased before coating, usually with alcohol, so this is pure marketing)

Brands 6 free:

  1. Nails Inc NailPure line (indicate the absence of alcohol and animal ingredients)
  2. Mavala (no animal ingredients or heavy metals)
  3. Pacifica (no animal ingredients) The brand is sold on Iherb.

7-free

  1. CND Shellac ( methyl ethyl ketone (MEK)-free)
  2. Ella+Mila
  3. Jessica

8-free

10-, 11-, 12-free

10-, 11-, 12-free is already pure marketing. Brands want to show that there is simply nowhere more natural. Most often, fragrances, nano-particles, various preservatives and even sugar with gluten get on the list) I entered these brands in a separate list, although, in my opinion, they could have been included in 8 -free, in the company of quite good varnishes)

Brands 10 free:

  1. 100% Pure (no fragrances or animal ingredients)
  2. Kure Bazaar (no nano-particles, no critical preservatives of benzophenone 1 and 3, Styrene is a synthetic polymer found in most previous varnishes that gives durability)
  3. Orly Breathable and the standard line of varnishes (claiming to be 12 and 13free, actually 9 and 10free. No animal ingredients, gluten and MEHQ / HQ and MIT - what it is, I could not find out)

Water-based varnishes

Water-based nail polishes are an alternative to traditional nail polishes. The compositions are as simple as possible - water, dyes (often these are mineral pigments) and polymers, for durability. Judging by the reviews, such varnishes just lack durability, they break off on the very first day. I would like to try them to see the quality for myself. Here are the most popular representatives of alternative varnishes:

  1. Acquarella
  2. Suncoat Girl (available on Iherb)
  3. Honeybee Gardens (noted to contain synthetic dyes)

Like color cosmetics, natural nail polishes are an emerging field. I really hope that science will find a worthy natural alternative to traditional varnishes!

It must be understood that nail polish is 70% chemical solvents and contains four main types of ingredients: polymers, solvents, plasticizers, pigments. Only some of them can be more or less natural. Therefore, it is more correct to speak not about “natural nail polishes”, not “eco-friendly nail polishes”, and even more so not about “organic nail polishes”, but only about more or less safe versions of the same type of product. You can read a conversation with Kirsten Hüttner about how we generally paint our nails.

However, the good news for anyone who doubts whether to switch to these safer options or not: the absence of formaldehyde or dibutyl phthalate does not reduce the consumer properties of varnish, because of which we buy it. It paints the nails in the desired color in the same way, remains on the nails for a long time, after which it can be washed off and repainted. Everything we love.

We tried three varnishes: German Benecos, American 100% Pure and American water-based Acquarella; all three are newcomers to the Russian market.

Benecos Expressive mint and My secret nail polish (490 RUB)

Produces decorative cosmetics with natural ingredients, some of which are BDIH certified. Varnishes, as we have already said, cannot be organic, but these do not contain the main harmful substances characteristic of traditional varnishes: toluene, phthalates, formaldehydes and camphor. However, Benecos lacquer contains nitrocellulose, which is one of the culprits for the yellowish coating on the nails with prolonged use of the lacquer.

In terms of quality of application, durability and washability, the varnish does not differ at all from ordinary varnishes, but it smells much more neutral. The first layer lays down pretty well, but the second is necessary for a beautiful application. Of the minuses - a thin round brush is not the most convenient for wide nails. The tips of the nails begin to “crumble” already on the second day, but the author of these lines does not keep any polish perfectly for more than two, maximum three days. Bottom line: high-quality varnish without harmful ingredients with a large palette and good application.

100% Pure Nail polish "Veloria" and "Jam" (740 rubles)

For its natural and wholesome formulations, beautiful colors and packaging, and a wide range of color cosmetics. In the case of varnishes, the brand did not disappoint either: the thick matte pale pink Veloria varnish, which we got, made a very positive impression. If your hand does not tremble when applied, then the surface will turn out to be even and very dense, and the color will be saturated. It is necessary to apply several layers, because. the second one looks much better than the first one, which is uneven.

The composition of the varnish can be considered safe: it does not contain toluene / toluene, phthalates, formaldehydes, camphor and even gluten - it is not entirely clear what the latter has to do with nail polish. 100% Pure orders its polishes from the US and maybe that's why they decided to mention the absence of gluten, which is a very common problem in the US.

This varnish also contains nitrocellulose, but the effect of it is noticeable only after a long time, so we cannot state it. Of the minuses, a rather pungent smell can be noted, which is rather associated with ordinary varnishes.

Acquarella Plasma and Hot Chocolate water-based varnish (1190 rubles)

Acquarella made an indelible impression on us. After being water based, we didn't expect anything good from this type of product. And in vain: Acquarella turned out to be a very pleasant varnish without the chemical-alcohol smell of solvents.

Along with polishes and remover, we also got a conditioner, with which you need to prepare your nails for application. If you use regular nail polishes, then you need to apply the Acquarella conditioner for a day, then wash it off and apply it again - within three days. After that, you can paint your nails with colored varnish. This procedure at first seems dreary and generally superfluous, but as a result, you don’t want to paint your nails with anything at all - they become pink, smooth and generally look much better than before conditioning.

As for the varnishes themselves, they also do not contain toluene/toluene, phthalates, formaldehydes, camphor, nitrocellulose and petrochemicals. In general, the composition of these varnishes is very concise: water, acrylic-polymer emulsion, non-toxic dyes: titanium dioxide (active ingredient); may also contain iron oxides and mica.

What is nice, the varnish does not require a base and fixing, and the most chic is that it can be diluted with water and thus the entire bottle can be used to the end. Of course, you can’t call it very persistent, but it calmly lasts for about two or three days, and if the varnish is light, then you can not renew it for quite some time. Unlike 100% Pure, which has a very thick texture, Acquarella polishes are more like liquid, and not all colors fit equally well. The photo above is an example of applying two coats of red Plasma polish, and it’s just gorgeous, but this is what another polish looks like, Hot Chocolate (to be fair, this is the right hand, which always turns out worse, but the polish itself not as good as red).

Another of the minuses is that you cannot wash off the varnish with an ordinary nail polish remover, you will have to buy a separate one (which, however, does not smell of chemical solvents, so this is rather a plus). Well, the price, of course, but in such cases you can always remember that prevention is always cheaper than treatment, and it is better to use more expensive natural cosmetics than to suffer from toxic pollution of the body later.

Manicure for a woman is as important as makeup. The modern market offers a huge selection of nail polishes. Their brands are so diverse that you can easily get confused in them. There are even special ratings for such products.

What distinguishes high-quality varnish

A good nail polish should:

  • apply evenly;
  • dry quickly in a few minutes;
  • be resistant to detergents and moisture;
  • do not change the look on the nails for at least 5 days.

Manufacturers often place metal balls in a bottle with high-quality varnish. They help to loosen the coating well and keep it for a long time. The bottom of a bottle with a quality product should be flat, and the brush should be in the shape of a half-open fan.

Brands of nail polishes from leading manufacturers often come with vitamins and additives to prevent flaking. coating with such components can have both pluses and minuses.

Advantages

Advantages of quality varnishes:

  • the presence of a convenient cap in the form of a cylinder and steel balls in the bottle;
  • shelf life up to 2 years;
  • medium long brush, not touching the bottom and leaving no streaks;
  • transparent bottle with a well-read label;
  • liquid composition that drips with one drop;
  • uniform coverage without air bubbles and streaks;
  • the absence of harmful chemical compounds;
  • quick and easy application and removal.

Flaws

The negative aspects include the presence of:

  • phthalates, which, along with providing flexibility after drying, can still harm the nervous system and cause skin irritation;
  • toluene, which not only helps to apply varnish, but also leads to nausea;
  • carcinogenic formaldehyde and formaldehyde resin, which help bind the pigment and cause allergic reactions;
  • camphor, which allows the varnish to dry quickly and shine, and also causes dizziness and skin irritation;
  • natural mother of pearl;
  • calcium.

There are also other disadvantages:

  • short-lived coating (2-7 days);
  • frequent smearing and chipping;
  • long drying;
  • Strong smell;
  • the possibility of an allergy.

What distinguishes a safe varnish

The brands of such coatings are distinguished by the presence of nitrocellulose in them. This element is considered protective and forms a hard layer on the nails. Safe varnishes may also contain healthy proteins and oils. These water-based coatings fix the dye with polymers rather than solvents.

If there is a CAB mark on the varnish label, this means that it is made from nitrocellulose. The coating with this component does not leave yellow spots on the nails.

The safety of varnishes is evidenced by such inscriptions as:

  • big 3 free;
  • big 4 free;
  • big 5 free;
  • big 7 free;
  • big 12 free.

Advantages

The positive aspects of safe nail coatings are:

  • non-toxicity;
  • the possibility of use by children and pregnant women;
  • hypoallergenicity;
  • no need to use bases and tops;
  • Possibility of dilution with water.

Flaws

These include:

  • removal with a special tool;
  • a small number of budget options;
  • very short time on the nails after drying.

What distinguishes professional varnishes

Such coatings have the following parameters:

  • safe composition;
  • obedient and plastic application;
  • self-leveling and fast drying;
  • long durability (2-4 weeks);
  • versatile purpose;
  • a huge selection of shades;
  • complete set of accessories.

Professional nail coatings are gel polishes that are easy and convenient to use not only in salons, but also at home.

How to choose nail polish worth up to 100 rubles:

They often use traditional nail polishes, explaining their choice with a rich palette, rich colors and durability. With the advent of modern technology - and enthusiasts who care - these advantages apply to "green" varnishes. The best ones are in the ELLE selection.

Cute little nail polish bottles filled to the brim with chemicals. It's bad for the environment, for nail technicians, and for your nails. The cheap preservative formaldehyde and its resins increase the risk of developing cancerous tumors of the nasopharynx, the solvent toluene harms the nervous system, the toxic solvent dibutyl phthalate is bad for the liver, kidneys, reproductive organs and nervous system, the camphor plasticizer can cause allergic reactions and dizziness. Therefore, more and more manufacturers refuse to use harmful components. The "3-free" marking means the absence of formaldehyde, toluene and dibutyl phosphate. The 5-free formula is also free of formaldehyde resin and camphor. We have selected 11 brands that think not only about trends, but also about the health of clients and nail technicians, not forgetting about animals.

"We believe in rock 'n' roll, Britain and fashion" - this is how the autobiography of one of the main players in the nail market begins. If you share these interests, you are here. Two British women - businesswoman Sasha Muir and manicurist Noni Krem - founded the Butter London beauty brand in Seattle in 2005. The unconventional palette, decent quality and 3-free formula appealed to the designers and received a pass to the London and New York fashion weeks.

During pregnancy, Australian model Kim D "Amato decided to surround herself with everything, everything natural. It worked out with food and cosmetics, but eco-varnishes could not be found. I had to take matters into my own hands. Kim opened an organic nail spa in New York and launched a line of Priti NYC vegan 5-free varnishes. They dry quickly, last long, contain a UV filter. The salon soon closed, the varnishes remained and fell in love with Lady Gaga and Stella McCartney. A little later, D'Amato came up with a soy remover (American ELLE called it the best ) and launched Priti Princess children's nail polishes in over 150 different shades and textures, and the brand supports local organic farms, collaborates with charities that help women and nature.

As teenagers, Ginger Johnson and Liz Pickett suffered from adverse reactions to toxins present in certain brands of cosmetics. Growing up, they spent ten years cooking in fashion, beauty and marketing, until they launched non-toxic nail products four years ago. There are not even forty shades in the palette, but Beyoncé, Madonna and Katy Perry still love Ginger + Liz.

Life in Southern California, where the sun shines 350 days a year, is unthinkable without a pedicure. Nail stylist Debbie Levit knows this firsthand. Five years ago, she launched Sheswai 5-free polishes, easily recognizable by their wooden caps. Products are not tested on animals, and Levitt donates part of the profits to nature conservation organizations Nature Conservancy (“Nature Conservation”) and WWF (“World Wildlife Fund”).

To spend a holiday in Greece and return without a bottle of Korres is a difficult task. Moreover, under the leadership of John and Lena Korres, not only purely natural skin and hair care products are produced, but also strengthening nail polishes with myrrh, oligoelements and vitamin B5. The formula is free of silicones, acetone, phthalates, formaldehyde, camphor, toluene and xylene. 23 shades do not allow much to roam, but they will completely form the basis of the collection.

Architect and herbalist Melissa J. Hertzler wanted to help her husband deal with skin irritation from daily shaving and made an aftershave at home because store-bought makeup wasn't working. The recipe was a success, and Melissa decided to turn her kitchen experiments into a professional business. In 1995, the Honeybee Gardens brand appeared, in the assortment of which there are water-based varnishes. Because of this, they dry longer: the maximum effect is achieved after 4-6 hours, which is why Herzler recommends doing a manicure before going to bed. There are 25 classic shades in the line, almost all of them are mother-of-pearl. The best part is that you don’t need a special tool to remove them, ordinary vodka is enough.

Zoya

In 1979, the chemist Mikhail Reizis and his wife Zoya emigrated from Russia to the States, where the former pianist received a license as a cosmetologist. Seven years later, the couple opened a small beauty salon, where they presented anti-wrinkle cream created by Mikhail, shampoo and conditioner, super-resistant non-toxic varnishes and a quick-drying top coat. Zoya was the first brand to eliminate all three harmful components, and later the other two. The range includes 400 shades - hardly anyone has more.

RGB Cosmetics

One day, Gina Carney got fed up with her favorite nail polish being discontinued. She started mixing shades herself, and getting compliments. In 2009, the brand RGB Cosmetics launched with 5-free polishes that are not tested on animals. With the participation of nail stylist Jenna Hipp, a system was developed for matching nude polish to the skin tone of the hands: four dense Nail Foundations and four translucent Nail Tints were obtained. Seasonal limited editions remain in the permanent collection: now it has 61 shades. An important plus - in the collection of RGB Cosmetics awards there is also the Elle Magazine Genius Awards 2012.
