Like the whole world, Russian people love celebrating their holidays. Celebrations in Russia reflect many aspects of its history, culture and traditions. Some Russian festivities are official public holidays and government offices, schools and banks have their days off. These are New Year (January, 1 st – 5 th), Orthodox Christmas (January, 7 th), Defender of the Motherland Day (February, 23 rd), International Women’s Day (March, 8 th), Spring and Labour Day (May, 1 st), Victory Day (May, 9 th), Russia Day (June, 12 th), National Unity Day (November, 4 th) and Constitution Day (December, 12 th).
The Russians usually celebrate holidays with plenty of food and presents. The most popular holiday is New Year’s Day. Russian people decorate fir-trees, cook delicious meals, make fireworks. All children wait for Father Frost and his granddaughter Snegurochka to get presents from them. On Christmas people visit their relatives and friends and tell fortunes.
Defender of the Motherland Day is also known as Men’s Day because all Russian men and boys, active servicemen and war veterans get warm greetings and special presents from their families, friends and colleagues. International Women’s Day has been celebrated in Russia since 1913 and it is the day for all mothers, sisters, wives, daughters and girlfriends. Spring and Labour Day appeared in Russia on the 1 st of May in 1890 after the strike of Chicago workers who demanded an 8-hour working day.
Victory Day is a sacred and dramatic holiday for Russia. The whole country commemorates millions of victims of the Great Patriotic war. Russia Day became a national holiday after the Declaration of Sovereignty was adopted in 1991. And National Unity Day commemorates the liberation of Moscow from Polish occupation in 1612 and it is celebrated with parades. Constitution Day is a celebration of the adoption of the Russian Federation Constitution in 1993.
Unofficial Russian holidays are also observed. There are religious and foreign celebrations among them: Old New Year (January, 14 th), St. Valentine’s Day (February, 14 th), Orthodox Easter Sunday, Maslenitsa, Cosmonaut’s Day (April, 12 th), Halloween (October, 30 th) and Mothering Sunday (in November).
Some Russians celebrate the New Year according to the Julian calendar that was used in Russia before 1918 and they call this holiday Old New Year. Easter is always celebrated with painted eggs and church services. Maslenitsa is a holiday of meeting the Russian spring with such rituals as eating pancakes and burning a dummy of winter.

Russia is one of the largest countries in the world. It occupies a vast territory of Eastern Europe and part of Northern Asia which are separated by the longest mountain chain, the Urals. The total area of Russia is about 17 million square kilometers. Russia is washed by numerous seas and three oceans: the Atlantic, the Pacific and the Arctic. It borders on Norway and Finland in the north-west, Estonia, Latvia, Belarus and the Ukraine in the West, Georgia and Azerbaidzhan in the south-west and Kazakhstan, Mongolia, China in the south. Russia has also a sea-border with the United States of America.
Russia’s land
Russia’s land is noted for a great variety of scenery. There are two plains, Great Russian Plain and West Siberian Lowland on which the country is located. Nowhere else in the world one can find so many forests situated mainly in the north and known as taiga. As for other wonders of nature, there are deserts, valleys and quite a number of mountains with the highest one being the Everest. The longest river is the Volga in Europe but such rivers as the Ob, the Yenisei and the Lena flowing in Asia are of great importance as well. Lake Baikal with the purest water on earth is a pearl of the country and is also the deepest lake in the world.

Due to the large territory of Russia there are several types of climate in the country. In the north it’s arctic, in the south – subtropical and in the central part it’s temperate and continental.
The population
The population of Russia is about 140 million people. The European part of the country with a number of big cities is more populated than small towns and outskirts but still you can find civilization all over the territory.
Industry
Russia’s industry is very well developed because the country is rich in such mineral resources as oil, natural gas, coal, iron, zinc, lead, nickel, aluminium, gold and other non-ferrous metals. A greater part of them is concentrated in Siberia and Far East. Russia’s agriculture is on a high level as well growing and exporting grain, meat and other products.

The fourth largest country
The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world with the population of about 250 million people. Its territory covers the southern part of North America and extends from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean. It also includes Alaska which is separated from Russia by the Bering Strait and Hawaii situated halfway the west-coast states and the Russian Far East. The total area of the country is about nine and a half million square kilometers. The USA borders on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south. It also has a sea-border with Russia.
Landscape
There are lowlands and mountains in the US among which the highest ones are the Rocky Mountains, the Cordillera and the Sierra Nevada. America’s most important rivers are the Mississippi which is one of the longest rivers in the world, the Missouri, the Rio Grande and the Columbia. However, they are unsuitable for navigation. The well-known Great Lakes located on the border with Canada are considered to be the deepest in the USA.
Climate
The climate of the country varies a lot. Crossed by mountain ranges from north to south, the country is unprotected from winds either cold or warm. This causes great temperature fluctuations. The climate of Alaska is arctic, that of the central part is continental and the south with its hot winds blowing from the Gulf of Mexico has a subtropical climate.
One of the most developed industrial countries
The USA is one of the most developed industrial countries. It is rich in coal, oil, iron and other minerals which form a solid base for the development of America’s industry. The United States is one of the leading countries in the world economy in such industries as mining, metallurgy, electronics and space engineering, chemicals, textiles, leather and footwear. Regarding agriculture, both animal husbandry and arable farming are prominent in the economy of the US.
Population
Though mainly European and African in origin, there are people of nearly all races and nations in the US.
System
The US is a federal Union of 50 states and a District of Columbia where the capital of the country, Washington, is situated. The US Constitution divides the government into three branches: the executive branch headed by the President, the legislative one exercised by the Congress and the judicial branch. The Congress includes the Senate and the House of Representatives.

American families
American extended families rarely live together in the same house or even in the same state! In most cases, parents and children live separately from grandparents, and children move out of their parents’ homes soon after they graduate from high school. Americans who live in towns and cities move often. A family stays in one house for four or five years, and then they move again. Some people move because they have found a new job. Other people move because they want a bigger or a smaller home. In American suburbs, families come and go all the time.
Improvements
Americans are always trying to make their homes better. They take a lot of time to buy furniture and make their homes beautiful. They buy books and magazines about houses and furniture. They work hard on their homes in the evenings and on weekends.
History in houses
Americans like to think the United States is a young country, but really it has a long and interesting history. You can see some of its history in the styles of the houses. The lovely pueblo houses of Native American villages, the old pioneer log cabins, the plantation houses in the South, the beautiful colonial homes of the Northeast - they are all a part of American history. They are part of modem America too, because people copy the old styles in new houses. The history lives on.

British people love their homes and consider their home to be their castle. In the UK there are a lot of TV programmes about houses. One programme, called ‘Changing rooms’ is very popular. One family or couple takes a room in another family’s house and they change the look of the room. Sometimes they change it completely, changing the furniture and the style. Sometimes the people who live there are very happy with the new room, sometimes it does not suit their taste and they don’t like the changes at all.
Types of housing
There are various types of housing in Britain. These range from the traditional thatched cottages to modern blocks of flats in the cities. Houses are often described by the period they were built in, for example, Georgian, Victorian, 1930’s or post-war. They are also described by the type of house they are. A terraced house is a house joined to another house. A semi-detached house is two houses joined together. A detached house is a house which has no houses attached to it. A bungalow is a one story house, and the word comes from hindi, the Indian language. The word was introduced into Britain during the British occupation of India. About 67% of British people own their houses or flats. The rest are ‘renting’ i.e. living in rented accommodation.

Fifty years ago this would have been socially unacceptable in Britain. In the past, people got married and stayed married. Divorce was very difficult, expensive and took a long time. Today, people’s views on marriage are changing. For every three weddings there are now two divorces — the highest rate in Europe.
Cohabitation
Cohabitation has risen 64% in a decade, with almost half of children now born outside wedlock. Before 1960 this was very unusual, but in 2001 around 23 per cent of births in the UK were to cohabiting couples. Academic studies consistently find that such children do less well at school and at work than the offspring of married couples.
Marriage at a later age
People are generally getting married at a later age now and many women do not want to have children immediately. They prefer to concentrate on their jobs and put off having a baby until late thirties.

A person who arrives for the first time in New Zealand, will find the kiwis very friendly and keen to help a foreigner in anything they could. This impression doesn’t change with time, like in some other countries which the tourist money is more important than the visitor. Kiwis are proud to show their country to anyone, and they know what a piece of paradise they’ve got there. Outside the bigger cities like Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch, it is difficult to walk for more than 15 minutes without someone saying hello, good morning, or a kindly gesture, demonstrating they noted your presence, and are happy for you to be there. The first holiday of the year is New Year"s Day. It is celebrated at midnight on the 31st of December. People say goodbuy to the old year and greet the new year with chmpagne and lots of tasty food.
There are different New Year tradirions in Russia like listening to the Kremlin chimes beating 12 o"clock, decorating fur-trees and homes with coloured lights, candles and toys.
Children get presents from Father Frost. Some people consider New Year"s Day to be a family holiday, others prefer to have New Year parties of their own.
A renewed holiday in our country is Christmas, which is celebrated on the 7th of January. People go to church services on that day because it is a religious holiday.
On the 8th of March we celebrate Women"s Day. Men do everything about the house: they cook meals, clean their homes, wash the dishes, take care of children and give women presents and flowers.
The greatest national holiday in Russia is Victory Day. On the 9th of May, 1945, our army completely defeated the German fascists and the Great Patriotic War ended. We honour our granmothers and grandfathers with having a parades, with a minute of silence and we put flowers on the tombs of soldiers.
Day of Russia is a new holiday in our country. It is celebrated on the 12th of June.
We celebrate Day of the Defender of Motherland on the 23d of February. We spend time with our husbands and fathers on that day.
There are also holidays like Easter, Maslenitsa, Day of Knowledge and lots of professional holidays which aren`t public holidays. Banks, offices and schools do not close on those days.

В России много национальных праздников. В эти дни люди во всей стране не работают так как проходят торжественные мероприятия. Основные праздники в России Новый год, Международный Женский День, 1-е мая, День Победы и День России.
Первым праздником в году является Новый год. Его празднуют в полночь 31 декабря. Люди прощаются со старым годом и приветствуют новый год шампанским и вкусной едой.
В России существуют различные новогодние традиции, такие как, слушать бой курантов в 12 часов, украшать елки и дома разноцветными огоньками, свечками и игрушками.
Дети получают подарки от Деда Мороза. Некоторые считают, что Новый Год - семейный праздник, другие предпочитают собственные вечеринки.
Возобновленный праздник в нашей стране - Рождество, которое празднуется 7 января. Люди в этот день ходят на слушать службу в церкви так как это религиозный праздник.
8 марта мы празднуем международный женский день. Мужчины делают все по дому: готовят еду, убираются в доме, моют посуду, заботятся о детях и дарят женщинам цветы и подарки.
Самый большой национальный праздник в России - это День Победы. 9 мая 1945 года наша армия одержала окончательную победу над немецкими фашистами и Великая отечественная Война закончилась. Мы чтим наших бабушек и дедушек парадами, минутой молчания и возлагаем цветы на могилы солдат.
23 февраля мы празднуем День Защитника отечества. В этот день мы проводим время с мужьями и отцами.
Есть так же такие праздники как Пасха, Масленица, День Знаний и много профессиональных праздников, которые не являются государственными. Банки, офисы и школы не закрываются в эти дни.

New Year New Year’s Day is celebrated on the 1st of January. People gather at midnight on New Year’s Eve to drink a toast to the coming year. They all hope that the coming year will bring luck to their families and friends . It is a tradition to decorate New Year’s tree with toys, colored lights and sweets. Each family prepare their holiday supper and lay the table. Five minutes before midnight people open a bottle of champagne and when they hear the chimes of the Kremlin Tower Clock at midnight, they drank a toast to the New Year. They wish “A Happy New Year” to one another and а real celebrating begins with a lot of good eating.

Victory Day One day unites all the nations and religious of Russia. It is May 9th or Victory Day. On June22nd,1941, the Soviet Union was attacked by Germany. The war against the invaders for freedom and independence was called Great Patriotic War. The agressor was defeated but the cost of the victory was too high. Over 27 million people of our country were killed during the war, both soldiers and civilians, the country was ruined. It was the greatest tragedy in the history of Russia.
